The beechwood is a hardwood species (compressive strength 680 kg / m³ and hardness 34 N / mm²), yellow colour. The beech wood it is darker in the darkness. In Switzerland is very easy to find but it must be dried very carefully to avoid defects and fissure. The beech can be cut easily because the structure uniform. It is very suitable for sculpture.
The beech wood is not very durable (Durability class: 5).
In the past the beech was used for food, detergents and fuel. In the 20th century in Europe was used as a substitute for edible oil, coffe consumption or other purposes. The germans carved runic signs (specific characters for germans) of beech wood. From here is the word legend “Buche” meaning “book” in German.
