For years Russia has maintained its status as the largest supplier of raw materials on global timber market. Even if the Russian government has adopted some strict laws regarding the export of roundwood, Russia remains the largest exporter of roundwood and one of the leading suppliers of timber and wood chips on the international market.
Approximately one-half of the quantity of exported logs is represented by pine logs and lumber which is destined to China. In 2009 roundwood exports to China decreased by one third and in 2010 increased by almost 2%.
In 2010 Russia`s share in Chinese imports constituted about 43%. The largest Russian timber importers are Finland, China and Japan.
