Production of pulp in the first half of this year increased by 5.7% to 3.4 million tonnes of paper production - by 6.2% to 2.7 million tons, production of paperboard - by 7.8%. These indicators suggest that the industry has begun to emerge from recession.
Today in Russia there are about 40 manufacturers of pulp. Most enterprises are part of timber holdings. Paper in Russia is produced in 29 regions. The leaders are Karelia, Permsk and Nijegorodsk regions. The newsprint paper is more than half of the total volume of paper that is manufactured in the country. Russian newsprint paper is one of the most competitive on global market.
An impediment to development of this industry is the low technological level of production. Existing production equipment have been purchased by companies 25-30 years ago.
