Jakarta – Germany has committed to invest 27 million euro in a pilot project which would demonstrate that Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation programme can function before its implementation in 2012.
The pilot project will begin this month in 3 regions: Kalimantan — Kapuas Hulu in West Kalimantan and Malinau and Berau in East Kalimantan — and will continue until 2016.
The programme will help regions prepare for carbon trading also in REDD`s scheme; it will aslo teach residents to monitor carbon emissions and how to increase their income through efforts to conserve the environment.
REDD wants to encourage developed countries to conserve their forests by measuring and giving economical values to the carbon resulted from stopping afforestations.
The saved carbon will be sold by credits to investors or industrialised countries with high emissions.
Agus Widiarto head of the planning section of the Ministry Forestry declared that the erman Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) will offer tehnical assitance for the programme. „The budget for tehnical assistance will be of 7 million euro and the other 20 million wll be given by The German National bank – KfW. Thus, we have 27 million euro”, declared Agus.
