Bulgaria's forest policy is stipulated in the National Strategy for Sustainable Development of the forestry sector, 2006-2015 and the Strategic Plan for Forest Development, 2007-2011, which was adopted by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2006.
In April 2008, the Bulgarian Parliament adopted the Forest Law in order to meet the challenge. Thus, was founded the National Forestry Agency (State Forestry Agency - SFA), under the aothority of the Ministry of Agriculture.
This reform is based on a strategic decision focused on improving public funds and financial management of the forestry structures.
For financial support of the Forestry Agency activities and to ensure sustainable development of forests, the National Financial Fund "Bulgarian Forest" was founded.
Financial resources from this Fund will be used for investment in forests, infrastructure development and technical equipment, the fight against deforestation, replanting trees, forest protection and certification, etc.
As an European Union member, Bulgaria has "harmonized" laws relating to forestry before integration.
