The rough period the wood industry is going through was confirmed by the economical data of the 2nd quarter of 2009, provided by Luca Rossetti, representant of the Italian Association ACIMALL. The message is clear: the long awaited signs of a economical come back are still far, and now we are in the middle of a stagnation period from the production point of view.
The semestrial raport, was made on a sample of companies of all sizes, for the time period april-june. The raport concluded that the demand has dropped by 53.8% in comparisson with the same period of 2008. foreign demands also dropped (by –58.5%), and the natioanal demand was reduced by 35.6%.
The situation might appear less dramatic if compared with the data for the first quarter of 2009.
Based on the information provided by the companies involved in this study, the followinf were revealed:
- 68% show a decrease in production
- 29% show a constant production and only 3% declared a raise in this sector.
From the existent stock point of view, 45% of the companies declare it as constant, 42% in decrease and 13% declare an increase in stock availability.
Unemployment is viewed as constant by 65% of the companies and in decline by the rest of the 35%.
Forecasts show a stabile period, although people are aware that a possible stop of demands will not allow them to belive in a comeback.
Contrary, the most popular believe is that the industry will recover to the pre-crisis level, only in a few years. For the following period, the opinions differ: 10% of the analised companies consider that the international deman will grow, 61% feel that it will stagnate and the next 29% think that the demand will diminish.
Acimall – the Italian Association of the producers of tools and other equipment is member of Confindustria and represents 220 Itallian producers, who account for 90% of the Italian production.
Wood production manufacturers are a relible sector for the Italian economy, having 12 000 employees, a 1.85 mld. Euro production rate and an 84% export rate (2008).
