At least 10 major furniture manufacturers have filled for bankrupcy in the last period. By March 2009, it is estimated that 30.000 workers in this industry will be unemployed. Land owners use the excuse of the financial crisis to sell their lands, stated the president of the Wood Industry Union Federatuin, Vasile Badica.
"The owners took advantage of the economical crisis: thus, they have fired the employees and filled for bankrupcy. The companies produce less money, so it is better if they sell the land the factory is located on. Afterwards, these locations are used to build department stores or residential parks. This type of businesses is estimated at 1 billion euro nation wide", said Badica. The union leader claims that the dismissals are not justified, because the companies were profitable. According to Badica, the number of employees in this industry has dropped from 165.000 to 150.000.
