Currently, forrests cover aproximately 26-27% of Romania's territory. In comparisson, to Austria and Germany, where forests cover over 40% of the surface, and in the Northen Countries, 80%.
In order to reach a degree of afforestion suitable with the EU demands, Romania would have to plant trees on a surface of 2 million hectares, in the next 25 years.
This action is stipulated in the Silvic Code, adopted at the beginning of 2008.
The Code shows the need to afforestate 80.000 hectares/year in the next quarter of century, so that Romania's territoy would be covered by forests up to 33-35%. Romsilva manages to plant trees on 15-20000 hectare every year, without any support from the government
Thus, in order to reach UE standars, Romania would require 125 years.
Most affected by afforestation are regions in Muntenia and south of Moldova. In regions like Braila, Galati, Ialomita, Giurgiu, Olt and Dolj, the degree of afforestation equals 5%.
