The Brazilian government has announced it's plan to stop the distruction of tropical forest, several days after new raports showed that deforestation level in the Amazon region have raised once more.
The 10-year-old plan is aimed torwards reducing the cuttings with up to 40% by 2009, a reduction of 30% by 2010-2013, followed by another drop of 30% between 2014-2017.
"The target is, that by 2007, the deforestations will be reduced to 5000 km²", declared the Minister of Environment Carlos Minc. He added that by slowing down the rithm of the deforestations, the carbon emissions released into the atmosphere will be reduced by 72%.
This action depends on Brazil's capacity to raise the funds necessary for it's fight against exploiters.
In august 2008, the Brazilian government founded the Amazon Fund - a mechanism that would help foreign governments raise money in order to protect the world's largest tropical regions and to fight against global warming. In September, Norway was the first country which contributed to this action.
This action comes as a reaction to the last figures released on Friday which shown that the deforestation rate has grown 3.8% since July 2008. Mr. Minc declared that this raise would have been bigger had it not been for the new anti-deforestation planl launched at the beginning of 2008.
