Efforts to minimize illegal deforestations in the Amazon region will intensify after attacks on government officials.
The Minister of Environment, Carlos Minc stated that the government shall not be intimidated by such acts of violence such as the arson of several cars and an attack over a hotel.
Protests began after the officials confiscated wood provided from illegal sources.
The acts of violence were aimed at the environment inspectors and it was raported that over 3000 persons were involved in these attacks.
The governmental environment agency, Ibama claims that protests began after officials confiscated over 400 m³ of wood, cut down illegaly from an Indian rezervation.
The highest deforestation rates in the Amazon region are recorded near the city of Paragominas.
