The governments od USA and Peru have announced the signing of a new treaty. Its purpose is to cutt down on the republic's national debts in exchange for conserving the country's tropical forests.
Thus, 25 million usd will be invested in protecting Peru's forests.
This agreement was made possible through the Tropical Forests Conservation Act (TFCA), of 2008.
Peru is one of the most richest countries in biodiversity. The fundings will help protect the dry forests from the central region of Andes and the tropical forests from south-west Amazon. These two regions shelter a large concentration of endemic species of birds and animals.
The new agreement with Peru marks the 14th Tropical Forest Pact. Such agreements have already been signed with Bangladesh, Belize, Botswana, Columbia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Jamaica, Panama and the Philippines.
These programmes will generate 188 millions usd aimed exclusively torwards protecting tropical forests.
USA is pleased to assist the Republic of Peru in conserving its forests.
The US's secretary of Trezorery, Henry Paulson welcomes this agreement, stating: "these types of pro nature treaties are successful examples of cooperation between the government and the citizen, with the sole purpose of conserving the environment".
