A serious problem brought in the EU's attention is the irational exploitation of forests. It has become an ecological catastrophe, with multiple effects such as: loosing the biodiversity, landslides, climatic changes as well as losing dozens, hundreds jobs, resources. This aspect favours corruption and even high level crime. Needless to say that this continious situation encourages conflicts and even disputes between nations.
By now, the European Union has supported and militated for voluntary measures which would diminish the irational and clandestine exploitations of forests. In Europe, aproximately 20% if wood imports come from illegal harvests from regions such as Central Africa and South East Asia, as well as the Amazon area.
Due to the fact that this issue has gained an unprecendented importance, the EU imposes on wood importers a series of measures which should certify the source of the wood, as well as the method that was used for its transportation and use. |
