The decision to ban these permits was taken last year, in november, as a direct consequence of the intense harvestings in the area.
Mwiikinghi Jonas, officer of the Rundu District Forestry stated that this restriction is still available, and there are no plans to change it, in the near future.
Jonas explained that the Foresty District is not in favour of raw material transports - such as timber transports from this region to others, claiming that these actions are not benefic to the local communities nor to natural resources. He adds that those who apply for these permits should adress the Local Forestry Office.
Currently, there are 5 forestry communities in the region: Ncumgara, Ncaute, Ncamagoro, Mbeyo si Hansi Kanyinga.
In this year alone, aproximately 40 cases of illegal cuttings were recorded byhe foresty office.
Persons caught in posesion of illegal wooden products can pay fines up to 8000 usd or receive 2 years imprisoned. |
