Away on a work visit, the government official, Mr. Dumei Boris Gryzlov, stated that, starting with the 1st of January 2008, due to the initiation of the project concerning log export, officialy, it’s consumption has dropped 14% since the same period of 2007.
Even so, the export from Russia to China (biggest log importer) has raised significantly this year, even if taxes doubled since last year.
Under these circumstances, the wood manufacturing companies dissapear or change profile, and China turns to illegal suppliers to compensate for its lack of raw materials.
Gryzlov added that the only solution to stop log smuggling is issuing a law which would ban Russia’s log export completely.
