| Yet, the price increase led to a raise of 8.2% in import value, according to the International Organization for Tropical Timber – ITTO. The data provided by Chinese companies show that 8.5 million metric tones of logs, valued at 1.4 billion dollars, were imported from China at the begining of 2008. 12.2% of this amount was tropical wood.
Russia disposes of the biggest sourse of timber – 5.878 million m³, followed by New Guinee with 631.900 m³, Gabon 278.000 m³, Malayesia 274.000 m³ and the Solomon Islands with 269.000 m³. The decrease of China’s demand for wood can be caused by the high price of timber and the earthquakes from tge Sichuan region.
